Can You Renew Your Nj Car Registration Online

Change of address labels are no longer mailed to customers, since the equipment and materials needed to do so are no longer available. We regret the inconvenience; however, the online address change system will provide an immediate confirmation of the address change in printable form.

New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission

If you intend to renew your New Jersey vehicle registration online, there is a credit card convenience fee for the transaction. You can also call 877-DMV-NJ4U (877-368-6548) to update your NJ vehicle registration. If you wish to renew your New Jersey vehicle registration by mail, you will be provided an envelope with the renewal notice. The following is for renewing your NJ vehicle's registration. New Jersey Registration Renewal Notice As a reminder that your plate decals are about to expire, the MVC will send a renewal notice that includes.

  • In order to register your vehicle with the NJ MVC, you'll need to be able to provide the vehicle title, proof of insurance, your Social Security number, an odometer reading, and payment for your registration fee and sales tax. If you are a new resident to the state, you'll also need to have your car inspected after you register.
  • Every car's registration has to be renewed annually in the state of New Jersey. The Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) of New Jersey sends a renewal notice near the time you registration is about to run out. You may renew your registration online, by mail or in person. If you are renewing online, you will need a pin code.
  • All US states require that you have a valid vehicle registration if you want to legally drive. Typically, you're also required to carry the registration card in your vehicle. If you can't find your registration card, however, you can usually check the registration status online or by calling your state's department of motor vehicles.

Use of the online system requires an email address to which the MVC will send an electronic letter confirming the change at the end of the transaction. Confirmations may be sent to your local printer at the end of the transaction. The MVC encourages you to retain the confirmation letter as proof of compliance with N.J.S.A 39:3-36, which requires all drivers to report address changes to the MVC within one week of the change.

To do so, log in to the web application using the number labeled 'DL' located in the lower right side of your registration card. Customers who wish to have updated official MVC credentials instead of a confirmation letter that reflects an address change may do so by visiting a local MVC agency with 6 points of ID, proof of address, and a credential change fee payment. (Updated licenses are $11.00 and updated registration documents are $5.00. Four year registration documents are $11.00.)

Customers who respond to official MVC renewal notices for either driver licenses, non-driver identification cards, or registrations will receive through the mail an updated credential reflecting any recently reported address change. Please allow approximately 2 weeks for delivery.
